Common Blue Violet (Viola sororia) is a low-growing native perennial with purple-blue spring flowers. It can spread to form colonies in suitable sites and works well beneath deciduous trees, along woodland edges, and in other part-shade plantings.

The flowers may be visited by early-season pollinators, and Viola sororia serves as a host plant for fritillary butterfly caterpillars.

Germination Notes

Cold-moist stratification for about 90 days is commonly recommended for germination. Fall or winter sowing outdoors can provide natural cold exposure. Seeds may include natural fluff and chaff.

Seeds will not germinate without stratification. Natural Stratification outside with freeze/thaw cycles is best, or use a refrigerator. If the fridge method doesn't work, you can use the outside method afterward, as long as the seeds didn't rot.

Sow seeds on the top of the soil; germination can take a few weeks to months and can be inconsistent.
