A Majestic Native Shade Tree with Iconic Smooth Gray Bark
Fagus grandifolia, the American Beech, is one of the most distinctive and beloved native trees in eastern North America. Its smooth, silver-gray bark is unmistakable, and in fall the leaves turn a warm golden-bronze that persists into winter. At maturity it reaches ~70 feet tall, making it a long-lived, commanding shade tree for large landscapes.
