Scientific name: Verbascum thapsus
Native to Europe and Asia; naturalized across North America
Tall Biennial with Yellow Flower Spikes
Common Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) is a biennial that forms a rosette of soft gray-green leaves during its first season and typically develops a tall yellow flower spike in its second season. It performs well in sunny, well-drained sites, including relatively dry or low-fertility soils.
Plants can produce substantial quantities of seed and may self-sow where conditions are suitable.
Growing Conditions
- Light: Full sun to part sun
- Life Cycle: Biennial
- Hardiness Zones: 4–8
- Height: About 2–10 feet in the flowering year
- Bloom: Summer
- Soil: Well drained; tolerates rocky, sandy, and relatively poor soils
Germination Notes
Direct sow in fall or start indoors before the last expected frost. Seeds require light for germination, so surface sow or press gently into the growing medium rather than covering deeply. A short period of cold exposure may improve germination consistency.
Seed collection year: 2026.
