Winter Sowing Seeds
Start your garden outdoors this winter. Explore hardy flower and herb seeds suited to winter sowing in clear, vented containers—an affordable way to grow seedlings without indoor grow lights.
Winter sowing uses outdoor conditions to provide natural cold, moist stratification for seeds that need it. Other hardy varieties can be sown later in winter or early spring. As temperatures rise, seeds germinate when conditions are right.
Use containers with drainage and ventilation, keep the growing mix moist, and monitor seedlings as the weather warms. Timing, sowing depth, and seed preparation vary by species and climate; follow each product’s germination instructions. Hard-coated seeds such as Baptisia may also need scarification. Not every seed in this collection requires cold stratification.
