Cardinal Flower (Lobelia cardinalis) produces vivid scarlet-red flower spikes from summer into early fall. Hummingbirds commonly visit the tubular blooms for nectar, and the flowers may also be visited by butterflies and other pollinators.

This native perennial is well suited to rain gardens, moist borders, stream edges, and other sites that remain consistently moist.

Germination Notes

Cold-moist stratification for about 6 weeks is commonly recommended before spring sowing. After cold treatment, surface sow the very small seeds and press them gently into the growing medium rather than burying them deeply. Keep the medium consistently moist while germination and early growth occur. Fall or winter sowing outdoors can provide natural cold exposure.

Seeds will not germinate without stratification. Natural Stratification outside with freeze/thaw cycles is best, or use a refrigerator. If the fridge method doesn't work, you can use the outside method afterward, as long as the seeds didn't rot.
