Tall Summer Annual with Pink and Purple Flowers

Cleome (Spider Flower) is a warm-season annual that produces airy pink and purple flower clusters on tall stems. The flowers may be visited by bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and other pollinators.

Plants can self-seed where conditions are suitable, so seedlings may appear in later seasons. It works well in cottage gardens, sunny borders, and naturalized annual plantings.

Growing Conditions

• Light: Full sun to part sun
• Type: Annual
• Height: Up to about 3 feet
• Bloom: Summer into frost under favorable conditions

How to Grow

Sow outdoors after frost danger has passed or start indoors before transplanting. Keep the seedbed moderately moist while seedlings establish. Allow mature seed heads to remain if natural reseeding is desired.

Germination Notes

Sow seeds shallowly, about 1/8 inch deep, in moist seed-starting mix. For indoor starts, sow roughly 4–6 weeks before the last expected frost; germination may be uneven. Some seed lots benefit from a brief period of cool, moist conditions. Keep seedlings in bright light, harden off, and transplant after frost danger has passed. Direct sowing outdoors is also possible once conditions are suitable.

Seed collection year: 2026.
