A Native Wildflower Hummingbirds Love

Eastern Red Columbine (Aquilegia canadensis) is one of the most beloved native wildflowers of the eastern United States. Its distinctive red-and-yellow nodding blooms appear in early spring — often the first nectar source of the season for returning hummingbirds, which are perfectly adapted to reach the long spurs. Native bees and butterflies visit too.

Unlike many columbines, the Eastern Red is a true East Coast native, naturally found in rocky woodlands, cliff faces, and shaded slopes from Canada to Florida. It's exceptionally adaptable, tolerating dry shade, rocky soils, and a wide range of conditions where other plants struggle. Plants self-seed gently, naturalizing into beautiful colonies over time.
