A Long-Lived Native Shrub with Striking Purple Blooms
Amorpha fruticosa, False Blue Indigo, is a tough, long-lived native shrub that produces beautiful spikes of deep purple-blue flowers in early summer, beloved by native bees and other pollinators. Once established via its large taproot, it’s virtually indestructible — thriving in a wide range of conditions and returning reliably for decades.
Growing Conditions
- Light: Full sun to part shade
- Hardiness zones: 3–9
- Mature height: ~3 feet
- Spread: ~3 feet
- Bloom time: Early summer
- Deer, rabbit & groundhog resistant
- Pollinator-friendly; attracts native bees
Germination Tips
Due to its large taproot, False Blue Indigo is best direct-sown in late summer from fresh seeds. For easier germination, soak seeds in hot water for 24 hours before planting. Once established, plants are long-lived and low-maintenance.
