Marshmallow Plant (Althaea Officinalis): Pollinator-Friendly Perennial
The Original Marshmallow — Edible, Medicinal & Beautiful
Marshmallow (Althaea officinalis) is a fascinating plant with a rich history — the root of this plant was used to make the original marshmallow confection in ancient Egypt. Today it's prized as a medicinal herb (the mucilaginous root is used in teas and herbal remedies for soothing the throat and digestive tract) and as a beautiful garden perennial with hollyhock-like pink and white flowers that pollinators adore.
Plants grow to an impressive 3–5 feet tall with soft, velvety leaves and produce flowers from midsummer through fall. An excellent choice for herb gardens, cottage gardens, and pollinator plantings.
