A Native Ground Cover That Thrives in the Shade

Viola sororia, the Common Blue Violet, is a beloved East Coast native that spreads gently to form a lush, low-growing carpet under trees and in shaded borders. In early summer it produces cheerful purple-blue flowers that are a key nectar source for early pollinators and a host plant for fritillary butterfly caterpillars. Deer, rabbits, and groundhogs leave it alone.

Growing Conditions

  • Light: Full sun to part shade
  • Hardiness zones: 3–8
  • Mature height: ~6 inches
  • Spread: ~6 inches (spreads by rhizome and self-seeding)
  • Bloom time: Early summer
  • Deer, rabbit & groundhog resistant
  • Host plant for fritillary butterflies
