3 Black Walnut Seeds for Planting

• Fresh this season, black walnuts will be prepared for planting
• Seeds will be dehulled, float-tested for viability, and held in cold-moist stratification from approximately late-October.

When the seeds are received

• Prepare 6-8" Pots with soil outside (cold is needed for germination).  A total of 70-120 days of cold-moist stratification is required for germination.
• Plant Seeds about 1-2" deep.
• Place screens on top of pots to prevent squirrels from digging out seeds.
• Roots will develop first, and plants will emerge around late April in Maryland (zone 7b), early May (zone 6a), etc.
• Note: Black Walnuts have large taproots and should be planted in their permanent spots while small.
• Black Walnut trees should be carefully planted in areas where their Juglone will not affect other plants.
