Fresh, Prepared Black Walnut Seeds — Ready for Cold Stratification
These are fresh-season Black Walnut seeds (Juglans nigra) prepared specifically for planting. Each seed is dehulled, float-tested for viability, and held in cold-moist stratification from approximately late October — so they arrive ready to go into the ground.
Planting Instructions
- Prepare 6–8" pots with soil and place them outside — cold stratification is required for germination (70–120 days total)
- Plant seeds 1–2" deep
- Place a screen over pots to prevent squirrels from digging out seeds
- Roots develop first; shoots emerge around late April in zone 7b (Maryland), early May in zone 6a
Important Notes
- Black Walnuts have large taproots — plant in their permanent location while still small
- Black Walnut trees produce Juglone, which is toxic to many plants — site carefully away from sensitive species
- Ships in September
