Fragrant Native Perennial with Purple Flower Spikes
Native Anise Hyssop (Agastache foeniculum) is a clump-forming perennial with anise-scented foliage and lavender-purple flower spikes in summer. The flowers provide nectar for bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and other pollinators.
It grows well in full sun to part shade and tolerates average to dry soil once established. It works well in native plantings, pollinator gardens, cottage gardens, and sunny borders.
Growing Conditions
- Light: Full sun to part shade
- Hardiness Zones: 4–8
- Height: About 2–4 feet
- Spread: About 1–3 feet
- Bloom: Summer into early fall
- Flowers: Lavender-purple spikes
- Soil: Well-drained; average to dry once established
Germination Notes
Surface sow or cover the tiny seeds only very lightly in a moist, well-drained seed-starting mix. Light can support germination. A period of cold-moist stratification of about 30 days may improve germination for some seed lots, but is not always required. Start indoors about 6–8 weeks before the last frost or sow outdoors in fall for natural winter exposure. Keep evenly moist until seedlings establish.
Seed collection year: 2026.
