Germination Notes
Black Walnut nuts intended for propagation: dehull seeds (we do this for you) and keep them moist and cool after harvest in late September/October. Cold-moist stratification for approximately 90–120 days at refrigerator temperatures is commonly used, or sow outdoors in fall for natural winter treatment. Plant the nut about 1–2 inches deep in a protected site (squirrels will dig) or a deep container, since seedlings form a strong taproot. Germination times vary.
Planting Considerations
Black Walnut develops into a large tree, so choose a long-term site with adequate room. Walnut roots and plant residues contain juglone; some garden plants are more sensitive to growing near walnut trees than others.
