I'm Pineapple Ground Cherry (Husk Cherry)
Scientific name: Physalis pruinosa
Native to Central and South America
Sweet, Tropical-Flavored Husk Cherry
Pineapple Ground Cherry (Physalis pruinosa) is an heirloom fruit in the tomato and tomatillo family. The small berries have a sweet, tropical flavor often described as a blend of cherry tomato and pineapple, and can be enjoyed fresh or used in salsas, jams, and fruit salads.
Plants grow low and spreading, generally without trellising. Fruits ripen inside papery husks that dry and drop to the ground when mature, making harvest easy to spot.
Growing Notes
- Start indoors: About 8 weeks before the last frost in a warm location.
- Germination: Can be slow and uneven; warm soil may help improve germination speed.
- Harden off: Gradually acclimate seedlings before transplanting outdoors.
- Harvest: Fruits are typically ready when the husks dry and fall from the plant. Harvest can continue until frost.
Germination Notes
Start seeds indoors about 6–8 weeks before the last expected frost. Seeds have a very hard seed coat, so germination can sometimes take a while. Sow approximately 1/8 inch deep in moist seed-starting mix and maintain warm temperatures around 70–80°F (21–27°C). Germination may take one to three weeks or longer. Transplant after frost danger has passed and gradually harden off seedlings before moving them outdoors.
Seed collection year: 2026.
