Mirabella Castelfranco Radicchio Live Plant – Mild Italian Chicory
Scientific name: Cichorium intybus 'Mirabella'
Mild, Beautiful Castelfranco Radicchio
Mirabella is an extra-early selection of Variegato di Castelfranco, an Italian chicory known for tender cream-colored leaves splashed and speckled with red. Its flavor is milder and more lettuce-like than many red radicchios, making it an excellent choice for fresh salads.
Seasonal color note: Young plants are green. Cream, burgundy, and red variegation develops as the plant matures in cool weather.
Why Grow Mirabella?
- Mild flavor for gardeners new to radicchio
- Decorative cream-and-red leaves
- Extra-early maturity—approximately 65 days under suitable conditions
- Excellent for salads, composed plates, and garnishes
Growing Conditions
- Light: Full sun to part shade
- Soil: Fertile, consistently moist, well-drained soil
- Spacing: 10–12 inches apart
- Planting season: Transplant after the hottest summer weather has passed
- Best color and flavor: Develop during cool fall weather
Water consistently while plants establish. In colder areas, use frost cloth or another form of protection when a hard freeze is expected.
Harvest
Harvest when the center forms a loose, well-colored head. Remove any weathered outer leaves to reveal the tender variegated center. Enjoy raw, lightly wilted, or grilled.
