Fresh Native Shrub Seeds
Spicebush is a deciduous understory shrub with aromatic foliage, small yellow flowers in early spring, and red fruit on female plants when compatible male plants are nearby. It is a larval host plant for the Spicebush Swallowtail butterfly.
Fresh-Seed Handling
These seeds are shipped fresh during their seasonal harvest window or will have started the stratification process in a moist media. Because fresh Spicebush seed can lose viability if allowed to dry excessively, sow or begin stratification promptly after arrival rather than storing the seed for an extended period.
Growing Conditions
- Light: Part sun to light shade
- Hardiness Zones: 4–9
- Height: Commonly about 6–12 feet at maturity
- Moisture: Average to moist
Germination Notes
Fresh Spicebush seed benefits from seasonal temperature changes. Fall/Winter sowing outdoors is a practical method because winter conditions provide natural stratification; seedlings a few inches high can be expected by mid-summer.
For controlled propagation: Some propagation protocols also use a warm period (we provide this after harvest-December), but research indicates it is not always necessary. The warm period breaks down the outer fruit and keeps seed moist. Next, cold-stratify for approximately 90–120 days at refrigerator temperatures (about 34–41°F). Check periodically for early germination; timing varies with conditions.
Seed collection year: 2026.
