A Native Shrub That Does It All

Lindera benzoin, Spicebush, is one of the most ecologically valuable native shrubs on the East Coast. In early spring, dense clusters of tiny pale yellow flowers bloom before the leaves emerge, providing critical early nectar for pollinators. In fall, glossy red berries (on female plants) feed migrating birds, and the golden-yellow foliage puts on a stunning show. The leaves and berries are aromatic — crush a leaf for a pleasant lemon-like fragrance, or use dried berries as an allspice substitute.

Spicebush is also the sole larval host plant of the Spicebush Swallowtail Butterfly — a must-have for butterfly gardens.

Growing Conditions

  • Light: Part sun to light shade — excellent understory shrub
  • Hardiness zones: 4–9
  • Mature height: ~6 feet
  • Spread: ~3 feet
  • Soil: Wet to moderately dry; adaptable
  • Edible: Berries (allspice substitute), leaves (tea)

Planting Tip

Plant a male and female for berry production — sex cannot be determined until berries form. We recommend planting 3 or more plants to improve the odds of getting both sexes.
