Mixed-Color Strawflowers for Cutting and Drying

Strawflower produces papery, daisy-like blooms in colors that may include pink, red, orange, yellow, and white. The flowers retain their shape and color well when dried and can also be used fresh in bouquets.

Xerochrysum bracteatum, formerly Helichrysum bracteatum, is a heat-loving annual that performs best in full sun and well-drained soil. Bees and other pollinating insects may visit the flowers. Regular cutting or deadheading can support continued flowering from summer until frost.

Growing Strawflowers in Pots and Containers

Strawflowers grow well in pots when they receive full sun and excellent drainage. Use a container with drainage holes and a well-drained potting mix. A container about 10–12 inches wide can hold one plant; use larger containers for multiple plants and space them so air can circulate around the foliage. Water thoroughly, then allow the upper portion of the potting mix to begin drying before watering again. Avoid keeping the roots constantly wet.

Container-grown strawflowers are useful on sunny patios and decks and can be cut regularly for fresh or dried arrangements. Deadheading or harvesting flowers before they fade encourages continued bloom.
